A local area network, abbreviated LAN , is a computer network that can also be extended to shared peripheral devices, which covers a limited area, such as a home, a school, a company or a complex of adjacent buildings.

The metropolitan area network (MAN) is a telecommunications network with an extension limited to a metropolitan perimeter. A MAN is obtained from the interconnection of several local area networks (LAN), while the interconnection of several MANs creates a wide area network (WAN).
