Fiesta time!
What do you think is happening in the picture?
Los Reyes
El 6 de enero
This festival celebrates the arrival of the three kings at the stable where Jesus was born.
On the night of the 5th January, parades take place across Spain where the three kings process through the towns.
In Spain, rather than Father Christmas bringing the presents to children’s houses on the 25th December, it’s the kings, who bring the gifts early on the 6th January, making this festival a lot more exciting than Christmas for most Spanish children.

What do you think is happening in the picture?
Las Fallas
El 19 de marzo
This is a festival that takes place in Valencia and lasts around five days.
During this time, local people build huge statues made of papier mâché, cardboard, wood or plaster. These massive figures are burnt on the final night of the festival, the 19th March, which is also the feast of San José - St Joseph.
Every year a vote takes place and one of the statues is saved from burning and kept in a local museum.

What do you think is happening in the picture?
San Jorge
El 23 abril
You may have thought that St George is the patron saint of England, but he is also the patron saint of two parts of Spain called Aragón and Cataluña.
In Cataluña, St George‘s day is like a Spanish Valentine’s Day when, traditionally, men gave women roses and women gave men books.
These days, roses and books are still the main gifts but the rules about who gives what to who are not so fixed.

La Noche de San Juan
El 23 junio
Go to almost any major beach in Spain on the Noche de San Juan - the night before St John’s Day, and you’ll see dozens of bonfires, beach parties and colourful fireworks.
This is a very popular festival in Spain that not only celebrates the feast of St John, but also marks the start of summer.

What do you think is happening in the picture?
Las Fiestas de San Fermín
El 6 de julio
10
Do you remember seeing the giants dancing down the street to the music at the Fiesta de San Fermín in Year 3?
This festival is famous all over the world, not because of the dancing giants, but because of the traditional ‘running of the bulls,’ which happens on each day of the festival.

What do you think is happening in the picture?
La Nochevieja
El 31 de diciembre
11
Nochevieja literally means ‘old night’ and refers to New Years’ Eve. On this night, families often gather together to share a meal before welcoming in the New Year.
Celebrations look a lot like the ones we have in the UK but with one big difference. The Spanish have a very unique New Year’s tradition which involves eating twelve grapes at midnight, one on each strike of the clock.
It’s actually quite tricky, but those who do manage it are said to have good luck for the whole year!
