What is homelessness?

Legal definition

People can be categorized as homeless if....

Homelessness is a state of being unhoused or unsheltered. It is the condition of lacking stable, safe, and functional housing.

Man sleeping on the streets

Not feeling safe at home and constantly moving

Sleeping at a friends house over a long period of time

refugees at a camp

Sleeping Rough

Internally displaced persons

Also known as sleeping or living on the streets. This is classed as primary homelessness.

This is when they don't have a set place to live. They could move around from house to house, asking friends and family to live with them.

This is someone who was forced to leave their home but remains in their countries borders. They are often referred to as refugees even though legally they are not.

This can arise because of financial problems or even because of the feeling of not being safe in the current living space and continuosly moving around.

Danny's story - Case study 1

"I am more free, happier, and I'm treated like an actual person. I don't need to ask to do things, I've been given opportunities to do stuff and meet new people."

Danny was a 15 year old boy who was in need of help from rock trust. Danny was dealing with ADHD and some personal isssues concerning his relationship with his Mum. Their relationship took a few turns and at times violence would occur between them, this lead to him feeling unsafe and needing some support.

So, Danny's uncle reached out and he was able to stay with him but later on The Rock Trust were finally able to help Danny out and provide him with shelter where he stayed with other flatmates.
