"-What language do people speak in New Zealand ?
Auckland
- Good question! In New Zealand, we speak English and Maori; however, only 4percent of my population can speak Maori fluently. We mainly speak English due to our colonisation by England. "
"-Who were your first inhabitants?
Christchurch
- My first inhabitants were the Māori, originally from Polynesia. They came to New Zealand about 1,000years ago, they could come because they had lots of canoes. By the way, I really like your questions!"
"-And can you explain me what are the symbols on your flag for ?
My flag
-Sure! On my flag, there are stars; it is a constellation, the Southern Cross Constellation. There is also an other flag, it is the Union Jack because I was a British colony."
"-But did not you saythat your first inhabitants were the Māori?
Signing of the Treaty
- They were my first inhabitants, I did not lie. However, I became a British Colony during the nineteenth century, and it has been made official by the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. It ended and I became my own nation in the early twentieth century."
"-And when is your national day ?
Lake Wanaka
- My national day is on the 6th February (it is called Waitangi Day). We celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, which was the 6th February 1840."
"-What time is it in New Zealand when it is 12pm in France ?
Travel by air
-When it is 12pm in France, it is 10pm in New Zealand if it is summertime ( daylight saving time), or 11pm if it is wintertime (standard time). I am in the +12 timezone while France is in the +1 or +2 timezone, that is why it is not the same."
"-Can you show me some pictures which are showing your culture ?
- Sure! I will show you some pictures on the next pages!"
