Earth System Presentation Tre'shon Williams Mass Movement
START
What is mass movement?
Earth Science Slide presentation
- Mass Movement is the downslope movement of soil and weathered rock resulting from the force of gravity.
There are about 6 different types of Mass Movements, which will be presented shortly.
Factors that influnce Mass Movement
- A third factor is a trigger, such as an earthquake, that shakes material loose.
- Water is the fourth variable that influences mass movements.
- One factor is the material's weight, which works to pull the material downslope.
- Second factor is the material's resistance to sliding or flowing, which depends on the amount of friction, how conhesive the material is, whether it is anchored to the bedrock.

RockFalls
Physical weathering processes such as freezing and thawing, as well as plant growth, loosen rocks on a cliff overlooking. When rocks break up and fall directly downward, they can sometimes bounce and roll, likely to result in a cone-shaped pile of coarse debris identified as talus at the slope's foundation.

CREEP
The slow, steady, downhill flow of loose, weathered Earth materials, especially soils, is called Creep. Creep usually occurs in regions of permafrost, or permanetly frozen soil, which is called Solifluction.

Affection of people
- Death.
- It can cause damage to property; villages can be buried and homes & forests can be destroyed.
Type of Mass Movements
- Slumps occurs when the mass of material in a landslide moves along a curved surface.
- Avalanches occurs in the mountainous areas with thick accumulations of snow.

Covering the hillside with steel nets can reduce risks of mass movements and harm to humans.
They can also put draining pipes on the mountainside to prevent flooding, etc.
People could build a barrier to keep rocks, water, etc from falling down.
