The Franco-Prussian War (July 19, 1870 – May 10, 1871) was a conflict between France and the Kingdom of Prussia in the late nineteenth century. during the conflict, Prussia received support from the North German Confederation, of which it was a part, and from the states of Baden, Württemberg and Bavaria. The undisputed victory of the Germans marked the last chapter of German unification under the reign of William I of Prussia.

It also marked the fall of Napoleon III and the monarchical system in France, as the end of the Second French Empire and its replacement by the French Third Republic. Also as a result of the war, France had to cede the territories of Alsace and Lorraine that were annexed to Prussia, although these territories only remained united to Germany until the end of World War I when they were reincorporated into France under the Treaty of Versailles.
