historical and social contexts in the Us
- The 50s for the US are very controversial years. From one side The United States after the 2nd world war is the most important and powerful contry in the world but from the other side a big part of the society is meaningless: the African American community
- For black people this was not a period of progress but a period of conflits. They had to live in an oppressive situation, where white people used violence and intimidations over black people, mostly after the law of the congress in 1954.
- African Americans had been fighting against racial discrimintion for almost a century.

After years and years of terrible life conditions something over this community started to move...in the 50s little groups of Civil Rights activists started to reclaim their power and dignity and began to spoke out against inequality and injustice.
One of the most important people who fought for black people rights in the US is Martin Luther King

Martin Luther King (1929-1968)
- he was born in 1929 in the USA, in a religious family
- in 1954 he became a pastor of a church
- in 1953 he married Coretta scott and had 4 children
- in 1955 he graduated in sociology
- he has always shown a strong spirit by focusing on the civil rights of black people
- he was part of "National Association for Advancement of Colored People" and he was president of "Southern Christian Leadership Conference"

- In the meantime he wrote 5 books and lots of articles
- In 1964 he received the "Nobel Prices for Peace"
- consequencese: he was arrested and assaulted
- he died in April 1968

How did he fight?
His protests were peaceful.He was inspired by the theories and methods of a famous pacifist man, Gandhi. He believed peaceful protest, non violence was the way to change the world. In order to assert black rights he assumed non violent forms of protest such as boycotts marches demonstrations speeches sit-ins

- he began his fight in 1955 when he and other civil rights activities got arrested for leading a boycott of the Montgomery, Alabama, public trasportation company.
- Through this the attention of America and the whole world fell to him
- for the next ten years he wrote, gave speeches and organized mass non-violent protests and demostrations to attract the attention of the public on racial discriminations
- the climax was reached with the march on Washington on August 28 1963 where King delivered his famous speech "I Have a Dream", in which he envisioned a world where people were no longer divided based on race.

"I Have a Dream" is a public speech that was delivered during the March of Washington on August 28, 1963. It was announced to over 250,000 civil rights supporters. In this speech King called for civil and economic rights and an end to racism in the United States. It was a defining moment of the civil rights movement and among the most iconic speeches in the history of America. The main idea was to protest against discrimination and to fight for freedom and equality.

(1913-2005)Known for the event of 1955 were she took a bus and sat on a seat reserved for white people. She was arrested for not leaving that seat to a white person.
(1933-alive)He is noted for leading the 1966 "March Against Fear" from Memphis to Jackson in protest of the physical violence that African-Americans faced while exercing their right to vote.
