Introduction
The Mafia in Italy (also referred to as «honored society») has origins and traditions and has played an important role in history, before and after Unity of Italy. The birth of the phenomenon would be due to immigration in Italy of three Spanish knights, brothers among themselves, named Osso, Mastrosso Carcagnosso, belonging to the secret society Garduna. The organizations of secular tradition are the camorra, the 'ndrangheta and Cosa nostra: some of these are historically born and developed in the traditional territories of southern Italy and almost all phenomena documented do not go beyond the nineteenth century.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE MAFIA IN ITALY
THE STRUCTURE Each family has separate business relationships, but the relationships of families can blend to a large extent depending on the nature of the work. The head of each family is known as «the head», or «don». All important decisions are made by the boss, and money from the family flows ultimately to him.
BELOW ARE THE TITLES OF MEMBERS THEIR ROLES:
- • Il Underboss: Some underbosses resolve disputes without involving the boss. He has specific activities that he operates.
- • Il Capo: A chief acts as a lieutenant, bringing his own family section. He has specific activities
- • I soldati: They are part of the family, but they maintain little power and make relatively little money. The number of soldiers belonging to a certain leader can vary enormously.
- Il consigliere: He is supposed to act as an advisor and make impartial decisions based on fairness rather than personal feelings or vendette. This position is intended to be elected by family members, rather than appointed by the head.

FALCONE & BORSELLINO: ANTI-MAFIA HEROES
Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino were two Italian judges who dedicated their lives to fighting against organized crime in Sicily. They were both assassinated by the mafia in 1992.
Falcone was born in Palermo in 1939 and became a magistrate in 1963. He quickly gained a reputation as a fearless prosecutor who was not afraid to take on the mafia. In the 1980s, he led a series of high-profile investigations that resulted in the conviction of hundreds of mafia members. Borsellino was born in Palermo in 1940 and also became a magistrate. He worked closely with Falcone and was similarly dedicated to fighting organized crime. Borsellino was known for his integrity and his willingness to take on the mafia.

EFFORTS TO FIGHT THE ITALIAN MAFIA
One of the main tools used is the creation of special teams of investigators and magistrates dedicated to the fight against the Mafia. These teams, such as the Anti-Mafia Investigation Directorate DIA, is an Italian law enforcement agency responsible for investigating organized crime and fighting against mafia groups in Italy.

THE REPENTANTS
explanation:
The repentants are former members of the Italian mafia who have decided to collaborate with the authorities and to reveal information about the organized crime to which they belonged. This choice is often made for reasons of personal security or to try to put an end to the violence and corruption that the mafia can cause.
TOMMASO BUSCETTA

In Italy, the first repentants of the Mafia was Tommaso Buscetta, who collaborated with Italian justice in the 1980s, providing information about the activities of Sicilian Cosa Nostra. Since then, many other members of the Italian mafia have become repentant and have provided important information for the arrest and condemnation of other members of the criminal organization.

COMPARISION WITH OTHER CRIMINAL ORGANIZATIONS
there are many other mafias and organized crime groups operating internationally. One example of an international organized crime group is the Russian mafia, also known as the "Bratva." This group has been involved in a wide range of illegal activities, including drug trafficking, money laundering, and extortion, and has significant influence in Russia and other parts of Europe.

Politics and corruption
The Italian mafia, particularly the Sicilian mafia known as the Cosa Nostra, has long been intertwined with Italian politics and corruption. The mafia has historically used its illegal activities, such as drug trafficking, extortion, and money laundering, to infiltrate and influence political systems.
One of the most notorious cases of mafia involvement in Italian politics is the "Tangentopoli" scandal of the 1990s. This involved a widespread corruption investigation that exposed a system of bribes and kickbacks between politicians, businessmen, and the mafia. The scandal ultimately led to the collapse of the existing political parties and the rise of the anti-corruption "Clean Hands" movement.
