Primary education (Ensino Básico) is from the age of 6 to 15.These schools are known as ESCOLAS BÁSICAS and have three cycles: *First cycle (primeiro ciclo): Grades 1 to 4 (6-10 years old); *Second cycle (segundo ciclo ): Grades 5 to 6 (10-12) *Third cycle (terceiro ciclo): Grades 7 to 9 (12-15)

The Ministry of Education (Direção-Geral da Educação – DGE) regulates the education system in Portugal, starting from pre-school up until secondary school. School groups (agrupamentos escolares) also work closely with local municipalities to assign funding and define the curriculum. The Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior – MCTES) oversees policies and budgets for tertiary education in the country.

. Schooling in France is highly centralized, and curriculums are consistent across départements. . There are no school board elections. .Parents may join a group organizing school activities, like the annual kermesse but have little influence on teaching. .French teachers teach – they are rarely involved in after-school activities. .Schools in France are strict, and the teacher-student relationship can be very formal.

THE frenchSCHOOL SYSTEM

. Public schools in France are free and secular. . Between 16-18, educational paths are chosen. The French school system is geared towards graduating with a baccalauréat (le bac). It is broadly equivalent to a High School Diploma.

.School days are longer in France but include a full or half day of closure on Wednesdays.. There is no dress code for any age. .French children have unnervingly neat handwriting drilled into them from a young age. .University education is essentially free in France. Education is compulsory from 3 to 16 years old.

THE Swedisheducation SYSTEM

DIFFERENT SCHOOLS .Independent schools – municipal or private .Sami schools .Compulsory school for students with learning disabilities .Free lunch for all students in Sweden.

.Education is key in Sweden. It is tax-financed, and compulsory from the age of 6.Grades are given from year 6 in school .National tests in year 3 (Swedish, Mathematics) .National tests in year 6 (Swedish, Mathematics, English) .National tests in year 9 (Swedish, Mathematics, English, Science and Social studies) .Grading scale: A,B, C, D, E, and F

Recent reforms in the Swedish school system

.In 2011, the Swedish Education Act was thoroughly revised, with higher formal requirements for teachers than earlier. The current act also puts more focus on student and teacher health, and allows more freedom of choice than previously.

That same year, Sweden's national curriculum came into force. The curriculum, which applies to all forms of compulsory education in the Swedish school system, came with new general goals, guidelines and syllabuses. Mandatory national subject tests to assess student progress – which were already in place for years 3 and 9 – were added for year 6.
