What is Discord?

What is Discord?

Discord is a VolP (voice over internet protocol) and instant messaging platform that launched on May 13, 2015. Users are able to communicate through voice channels, private messaging, public chats, and video calls. Discord primarly is used as a social entertainment platform; however, it is growing in popularity as an information sharing platform. This training is designed to help you understand the basics of Discord and help you implement them into your daily life.

How Can We Use It?

Discord can be used in your browser and in an application. The browser version is accessible on Discord's website, but this module will show you how to install the application.

Step 1: Go to Discord's website and click "Download for Windows".

Step 2: Select a file where you want Discord to be placed, and click "Save".

Step 3: Go through the setup wizard, and the application will open the landing page.

On the far right, you will see which of your friends are active on Discord.

To the right of the server list, you will locate the friend's list.

On the left hand side, you will see the list of servers that you are apart of.

At the very top is the "Friends Bar". Here, you can see which of your friends is online, pending friend requests, friend requests, and your blocked list.

Finally, on the bottom left side, you will find your server ID. Here you can utilize the Mute (block your microphone sounds), Deafen (block incoming sounds), and the Settings button.

When you click on the "User Settings" icon in your server ID, you are greeted with this page. The information displayed shows your user profile, associated email, profile picture. You are able to change your password, use two-factor authentication, and disable/ delete your account if need be.

On the left hand side, there is a long list of items where you can get specifc in your settings customization. The "User Settings" is where you can customize your user account.

The "Billing" section is where you can set up payments for the optional "Nitro" service.

The "App Settings" icon allows for users to you customize the Discord application with things like appearance, accessibility and custom keybinds.

The "Activity Settings" tab allows users to customize the game overlay, registered Discord games, and privacy while engaging with the application.

These are the last two sections in the settings list. Here, you can see the updates that Discord uses in the application. Also , you can learn about Hypesquad, and log out of your account if need be.

What is a Text Channel?

A text channel is one of the ways that you can communicate with friends in a server. Text channels can be individual or in a groupchat setting. The settings are similar for both, so I am going to show the group text features for continuity.

This is what the group text channel looks like. The messages are arranged in time order. There are a multitude of features that shown on this image, so we are going to take a closer look.

This icon allows users to input GIFS and emojis. Stickers can also implemented in this feature, but this is exclusively a paid feature.

This button allows users to gift other members in the groupchat (Paid feature only with Discord Nitro).

The plus button allows you to add files the group text chat.

This icon allows you to create seperate threads in the chat.

In sequence, we have the notifications icon , pinned messages, and "Hide members" icon.

This is the name of the chat that all members are apart of.

Voice Channels

What is a voice channel?

A voice channel is the second way that Discord users can connect with people inside of a server. Users can join the voice channel by clicking the text displayed next to the volume symbol.

This shows if a user has successfully connect to the voice chat, and how strong the signal is.

This allows a user to disconnect from the voice channel.

This icon allows users to add sounds via a soundboard.

This icon allows you to connect a camera if you have one installed.

This icon allows users to start activites for others to connect.

This icon allows users to connect share their screen to other members.

What is Krisp Audio?

Krisp Audio is an AI-powered software that cancels out background noise, and allows a user's audio to be crisp and clear. Krisp Audio is built into Discord, and it is easily accessible to Discord users.

Where to Find Krisp

Where can you find Krisp in Discord?

You can find Krisp Audio if you go to User Settings > Voice and Audio > Noise Suppression. You can click on the button that says "Krisp", and it will cancel out the background noise from your microphone.

Editing Server Profiles

Server Profiles

The "Server Profile" setting allows users to change names based on the server they are in. They are able to do this in the settings. A user can go to User Settings > Edit User Profile > Server Profiles and change it from there.

In the picture, you can see the preview of what a user's server profile would look like it. A user can change their picture on the gray icon.

Users can also create their own server. The first step that a user would take to create a server would to be to click the plus button, which would lead to the white-background list where a user can build a server from scratch or using a template.

The second step to creating a Discord server is to select a frame for which the server is based upon. You can choose between a club setup or a friends' setup.

The third step to create a Discord server is to give the server a name. Once you are satisfied with it, you can click "Create", and you are off to the races!

Every server comes with a general voice chat and text channel. but users can make seperate ones by clicking the "plus" icon next to the "Text Channels" or "Voice Channels" icon. Users can then name the channel they want to make, establish a private channel (if needed), and they can click "Create Channel" to finalize it!
