Johann Sebastian Bach and the fugue 1685 - 1750

  • He helped develop new musical forms like the fugue.
  • In a fugue, two main musical parts called the subject and counter-subject enter at different points, weaving round each other throughout the music.
  • His concertos, organ music and church music are often still performed today.

George Frideric Handel and the oratorio 1685 - 1759
  • German composer, who spent most of his life in Britain.
  • Handel was influenced by all the Baroque composers who came before him, so his work combines different styles.
  • He introduced the oratorio to Britain - a religious vocal work, like opera, but without theatrical staging.
