The Royal Family

  • The Queen ruled for longer than any other Monarch in British history, becoming a much loved and respected figure across the globe.
  • Charles became King the moment his mother died. He married Lady Diana Spencer. The couple had two sons, William and Harry. They later separated and their marriage was dissolved in 1996. On 31 August 1997,the princess was killed in a car crash in Paris.​

Buckingham Palace has 775 rooms. These include 19 State rooms, 52 Royal and guest bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms. In measurements, the building is 108 metres long across the front, 120 metres deep (including the central quadrangle) and 24 metres high.

Today, Buckingham Palace is very much a working building and the centrepiece of the UK’s constitutional monarchy, serving as the venue for many royal events and ceremonies from entertaining foreign Heads of States to celebrating achievement at Investitures and receptions.

Holyrood Palace

The Palace of Holyroodhouse commonly referred to as Holyrood Palace or Holyroodhouse, is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. It has served as the principal royal residence in Scotland since the 16th century, and is a setting for state occasions and official entertaining.

Wars of the Roses

Succession of civil wars over the throne between the House of Lancaster and the House of York. The wars were finally won by Henry VII(Lancaster) who married Elizabeth of York,thus uniting the two dynasties.

Commonwealth The goverment of King Charles I of England was replaced by a republic called the Commonwealth of England (1649-1653).The main supporter of the republic was Oliver Cromwell. Charles II of England was recalled to the throne in 1660. Bill of Rights In the 1689 we have the Bill of Rights wich provided for the Crown and the English Parliament to collaborate in the goverment.

The Acts of Union

HENRY VIII

Henry VIII was King of England from 1509 to 1547, he was born at Greenwich on the 28th of June 1491, he was the second son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. He became heir to the throne after the death of his elder brother, Prince Arthur, in 1509. King Henry VIII ruled England for 36 years (1509-1547).

In his youth he was athletic and highly intelligent, skilled in French, Latin and Spanish. Henry was talented both in writing poems and musical scores As the author of a book which defended the Roman church from the slander of Martin Luther he was given the title 'Defender of the Faith' by the Pope. The King’s main political interest was in foreign policy, he formed alliances with the kings of Spain and France, and the Holy Roman Emperor. (Henry was related by marriage to all three).

Henry also invested in the navy, he increased it's size from 5 to 53 ships

He was fond of hunting abd tennis.

The monarch’s desperate need of a male heir and political unification led him to two divorces and to the beheading of two of his six wives. His chaotic love life caused an unstable succession and led to the break with the Church of Rome.
