Reported Speech

Patricia Sáenz Ortiz

Direct Speech: is the exact words someone said. We use quotation marks in direct speech

"I didn't do the graffiti on the school wall"

Reported speech is the exact meaning of what someone said, but not the exact words. We do not use quotation marks in reported speech. The word that can either be used or omitted after the introductory verb (say, tell, etc).

Francisco told me that he hadn't done the graffiti on the school wall.

In reported statements we can use introductory verbs such as 'say' or 'tell'. The meaning is the same, but the grammar is different. For example

"I cheat on my boyfriend"
say =

tell =
