Lynching In Today's Society
According to our laws now, lynching is a form of murder. It is inhumane and a disgusting act of murder that should have never been established in the first place.
Lynching
A black individual would be hanged by a mob of enraged white people without given a chance to be tried. this was used frequently to intimidate black people into submission. From the passage, Strange Fruit, lynching is defined as an act of hanging someone as a form of murder.
What does lynching mean to you?
The 1920's saw an increase in hate crimes and black people were frequently beaten and killed. Lynching was a frequent tactic used by whites to victimize black people.
Summary
After moving to Brooks County, Georgia the plantation owner, Smith was shot and killed by one of his coworkers. The following weeks were led by mob driven manhunts looking to find the killer. Mary Turners husband, Hazel, was a suspect and from this knowledge, he fled the city and was essentially killed. When Mary Turner denied that her husband was the murderer, mobs came after her. Mary was tied up, drenched in gasoline and hung. Her baby was cut from her stomach and stomped to death and she was shot hundreds of times.
What happened to Mary Turner
Mary Turner, also Mary Hattie Graham, was born December 1899 to parents, Perry Graham and Elizabeth Johnson who were sharecroppers with four children. On February 11, 1917, 17 year old Mary Graham married Hazel Hayes Turner in Colquitt County, Georgia. They had two children before marriage named Ocie Lee and Leaster. The family moved to Brooks County, Georgia and became slaves on a plantation with owner Smith.
Personal Response
Mary Turner's death sparked concern all throughout the counties of Lowndes and Brooks. Hundreds of people fled and this prompted the NAACP officials to ask Missouri Congressmen to craft the 1922 Der Anti Lynching Bill. This bill got through the House of Representatives, but never passed through the U.S Senate because of opposition from Southern democratic senators.
Her death was a crucial part in African American history, but not only did this lead to other African American deaths but also so many tramautizing stories. Violence, police brutality and white supremacy avts were prominent during these times and Mary Turner, her husband and her unborn child were victims of unjust acts of inhumane conditions of violence.
Connection
Meaningful Connection
Mary Turner, Hazel Turner and their unborn childs death was a terrible and disgusting act of murder that was not unusual during this time. Strange Fruit, a song from Billie Holliday was another example of lynching being discussed. "Big Boy Leaves Home", is a story that discussed violence and murder. These arent just stories, they are real world situations that play an important part in African American history.
Many years after Turner's death, historical landmarks were put in place for her families deaths. In the early 2000s, the Mary Turner Project, a small but dedicated group based out of Valdosta State, spearheaded a coalition to erect the historical marker, hoping to end the silence. The marker went up in 2010. Within a year, someone shot a bullet right through its middle.
