PURPOSE

HELLO, My name is Cheyla Wallace and I am very proud to be part of the students that will be graduating this year 2023 from New Britain High School. I came to this school in 2021 in my junior year of high school, you may wonder why I came to this school in my junior year of high school or where I come from, well the answer is this, I grew up in Spain and lived in Spain since I was 5 years old, I finished elementary and high school in Spain, It will sound strange to you that I also finished and graduated from high school in Spain when here I am still in high school, our education system in Spain works differently, the third and fourth year here what would be in Spain first and second year of high school is optional those two courses you do if you want to go to university, this is the reason why I already have a high school diploma in Spain. I always knew and said that when I graduated from high school I would finish my studies in the United States, if in this place that still lacks many advances and where education is poor and degraded, but a place where if you know how to take advantage and benefits and keep in mind what you came here for you can get it, you can get wherever you want.

FRESHMAN HIGHLIGHTS

My first year of high school was like a laboratory experiment, the school I graduated from in Spain CPI LA JOTA decided to become an integrated center, which means that we would be kindergarten, primary and secondary, because it was the first year of having high school students, the resources we had were basic, but the necessary to carry out all the learning we needed.

  • New teachers.
  • Some new classmates.
  • My first year of high school was a good year, but not one of the best, there was still a long process of maturing in some aspects.
  • The best decision I made was to stay at my old school with the same friends I always had.
  • I met a wonderful teacher, David, he was my English teacher, with whom I still have contact and whom I wish to see again when I go back to Spain.

SOPHOmore HIGHLIGHTS

In my second year of high school I strengthened friendships with many friends and began a process of maturation and awareness, I was already clear about what I wanted to do and where to go, but that year it was even more so.

  • Trip to Italy, Salerno.
  • Love for physics and chemistry.
  • New teachers.
  • I learned new study techniques and how to memorize better.
  • Friendship reinforcement with my friends for 12 years, Sergio, Maria, Candela, my lifelong friends.

JUNIOR HIGHLIGHTS

My junior year of high school I will never forget, everything became computerized, COVID came into our lives.

  • In Spain they closed the schools on March 9, 2020, the threat is already real.
  • What started with a 15-day closure announced by President Pedro Sanchez turned into a lockdown of almost 3 months.
  • Spain had one of the most aggressive COVID lockdowns.
  • Personally, I did not suffer from the covid nor did it cause me any kind of problem because I was with my mother.
  • The classes became remote through a screen.

SENIOR HIGHLIGHTS

My last year of high school in Spain is here.

  • Back to classes after months without going back.
  • Fear of covid.
  • Mandatory use of masks at all times.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Graduation!!!!!!

FIRST YEAR HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS

This was my first year here at New Britain High School, that year was a year to locate and inform myself about all the courses, academies, programs that this school offered so that next year my senior year I would know which classes were the best for me.

  • I started classes at the end of September.
  • Honor roll during all 4 quarters.
  • High GPA.
  • Interviewed to enter the nursing assistant program.
  • Finished the course with a 3.8 GPA.

ADVICE TO A 9TH GRADER

I am Cheyla and I am a 2023 graduate of New Britain High School and this is my advice to you as a new student on the long, but beautiful road to high school. New Britain High School is a world of opportunities, it is a place that is there to help you during the four years you will be here. This school has all kinds of educational aids available for you to take advantage of such as the various academies we have, the Business and Finance Academy, the Health and Science Academy, the Manufacturing, Engineering and Technology Academy, and the Public Services Academy.

  • Different sports for both boys and girls.
  • Social workers to help you when you need it.
  • A health center.
  • Assigned counselors to help you.
My biggest piece of advice would be to make the best use of all the time you will be here preparing for an adult life and when this stage is over be proud of everything you have accomplished and done.

POST GRADUATION PLAN

CRITICAL CARE NURSE

My plans after graduating this summer are as follows, to go to Spain for the whole summer and see my 3 lifelong friends, I haven't seen them in 3 years. Upon returning from Spain in the early fall I will start as a full time student at Tunxis community college and begin my career as a critical care nurse. You may wonder why I decide to study this profession, my answer is the following, at first my plans were to practice within surgery, but this is a long career, more than 10 years, so I will study critical care nursing, I will practice and continue my studies towards surgery. Apart from these reasons I decided to study this career because I am passionate about helping people and helping them to ease their life a little bit, I have always liked everything related to medicine and providing direct care to patients. Thanks to the nursing assistant program at the school and the internship at the hospital I have been able to realize that this is what I really want to do, being directly with patients and helping them has awakened my passion for medicine.
