FLATWORM
REPRODUCTION
Flatworms
Characteristics
They range in length from much a fraction of a millimeter to 15 centimeters. There are many species of flatworms and the group contains over 20,000 species.
Flatworms are invertebrates with soft, flattened bodiesFlatworms live in a variety of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial habitats worldwide.
Flatworms
reproduction
Flatworms usually reproduce sexually, but there are a few that are capable of doing so asexually. Flatworms reproduce sexually, but most species hermaphroditic meaning they contain both eggs and sperm in the same body and therefore do not need to find a mate. Asexual reproduction can take place in two different ways: fission or budding.
Budding
Asexual reproduction
When flatworms reproduce, buds grow along the length of the parent's body. These buds form chains until they are ready to separate into new individuals.
Fission
Asexual reproduction
Flatworms can also reproduce through a process called transverse fission. The front half of the worm continues to crawl forward while the back half attaches to the ground until the two parts separate. A whole worm regenerates from each half.
Studying flatworms
The study of flatworms is difficult, as some of these species live under very extreme conditions, such as complete darkness. As such, learning about this creature's reproduction is challenging, because we cannot directly observe them.
Advantages
of asexual reproduction
The main advantages presented by this type of asexual reproduction is that they are able to produce offspring when the individuals are unable to do so sexually, allowing them to survive in more hostile environments. It also allows them to repopulate when there aren't as many individuals, as they can use these methods to reproduce faster.
Thanks!
