answer the questions

first of all

what are we talking about?

Arts and cultural heritage are valuable tools to encourage the development and use of skills. Museums play their role in promoting social inclusion when they become educational environments and interact with all social groups through critical thinking, understanding, collaboration, communication, enjoyment, knowledge, creativity, and through the intervention of guides, educators, teachers, facilitators to listen, interact and promote active experience, both emotional and physical.

first of all

what are we talking about?

Many museum activities are not only designed for children and their family, but also for adult visitors, either alone or in groups. The creation of their own personal museum is one of the most succesful activities nowadays. It is possible to make our own personal exhibition in contexts of formal or non-formal education.

a little bit of history about museums

Topic One

once upon a time...

A journey through the centuries. Come with me!

Since the 17th century onwards in Italy there are many examples of donations through which educational materials were offered to young students. In the past museums were sacred places where it was only possible to observe works of art, science and technology. Nowadays visitors can shift their point of view: from the mere observation of an object to a full fruition allowing a critical evaluation.

In 1603 the naturalist Ulisse Aldovrandi donated his collections and his library to the Senate of Bologna

In 1776 Empress Maria Teresa of Austria founded a collection of works of art for educational use in the Brera Palace (the first collection of the future Brera Art Gallery in Milan)

In 1769, in Florence, the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo of Lorena exhibited the art collection of the Medici family at the Uffizi Gallery.

Critical thinking

in modern times...

A true debate about education in museums was opened in the 1950s thanks to international organizations as UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) and ICOM (International Council of Museums)

POP UP MUSEUM

Topic Two

Creating a pop up Museum

Pop Up Museums are temporary exhibitions created by people to share and participate. They can be realized in every space, institutional or not, and with every object possible.

Objects, if considered individually, represent the grammar and semantics of the discourse. What truly matters, however, is the parameter to follow when displaying the objects, as it allows to organize the entire discourse...

...just as it happens with words. If used in different orders, words can convey different meanings. In a pop-up museum the arrangement of the objects is established by the working group.

They are cheap and do not require a long preparation. They can create a link with traditional works of art. They can be a starting point to encourage people to visit institutional museums.

how to create a mini pop up museum

Objects can be placed inside clear sheet protectors and hung on a stretched rope or glued to the wall, if possible. Each work is given a title just as if it was a work of art.

Creating a mini pop-up museum consists of manipulating well-known objects, choosing them and producing a shared temporary exhibition.

The second step consists of letting people create an individual work of art, using the materials given by the facilitator.

The arrangement of the objects is decided by the group, which also gives a direction in order to give them a specific sense.

ready to pop up?

Materials needed

Two clear sheet protectors for each participant, two clothes pegs for each participant, scissors, sticky labels, coloured cards, glue, a long rope, tape (given by facilitator). Personal objects provided by participants (even objects contained in their bags or backpacks), can also be used.
