Estimates indicate that 1 in 10 people in the world are hungry.

These people are mainly located on the Asian continent, around 425 million people representing 9.1% of the population and on the African continent, around 278 million people representing 20.2% of the population.

Worldwide, about 1 in 3 people lack regular access to adequate food.

Malnutrition in all its forms remains a challenge today. Globally, in 2020, 22% of children under 5 years of age are stunted, 6.7% is wasted and 5.7% are overweight.

CAUSES

There are several reasons that have contributed to a worsening of hunger and food insecurity. The COVID-19 pandemic, conflicts, climate change and increasing inequalities have all contributed to the worsening of world hunger. Since the pandemic, there has been an increase of 150 million people affected by hunger.

Inequalities in food system

The issues of hunger and inequalities are enhanced by power relations. This refers to the degree of control over material, human, intellectual and financial resources. The groups with the lowest social, economic and political power are those that suffer most from hunger and malnutrition, both in rural areas in the poorest countries and in large cities in marginalized communities in the richest countries. The inequality in the distribution of hunger and nutrition reflects the inequality of power between the two extremes of the food system: small farmers and low-pay producers and, on the other hand, the most vulnerable and marginalized groups of people facing the problems of hunger and malnutrition.

Malnutrition

An abnormal physiological condition caused by inadequate, unbalanced or excessive intake of macronutrients and/or micronutrients. Malnutrition includes undernutrition (child stunting and wasting, and vitamin and mineral deficiencies) as well as overweight and obesity (FAO, 2023)

Undernourishment

Undernourishment is defined as the condition in which an individual’s habitual food consumption is insufficient to provide the amount of dietary energy required to maintain a normal, active, healthy life. The prevalence of undernourishment is used to measure hunger (FAO, 2023)
