Human Impact on Aquatic Ecosystems:

Coral Reefs

By: Jack Voehringer

Why are coral reefs important?

The Significance

Humans: Coral reefs provide protection to coastlines from erosion, provide jobs, and offer recreational activities, like fishing or snorkling. These opportunites can serve as a driving force for local businesses in the economy. Animals: Around 25% of the ocean's fish populations rely on coral reefs. Therefore, the destruction of these areas can prove to be very harmful for these animals. There are many organisms that use the reefs to recieve shelter, find food, and reproduce. There are some reefs that support more than 7,000 species of animals.

"Land forests are the coral reefs of the ocean of air"

- STEVEN MAGEE

Just as rainforests are a biodiversity hotspot on land, the same is for coral reefs in the ocean. These areas are crucial to the lives of many animals, which depend on the enviornments.

What is contributing to their disappearance?

Where causes the vanishing of coral reefs?

- Pollution- Overfishing - Harmful FIshing Practices (Using explosives) - Mining Coral - Global Warming

What is the current forecast for coral reef populations?

What the future looks like for coral reefs

The most recent studies reveal that around 75% of world’s coral reefs are being threatened due to local and global issues. These pressures are expected to severely threaten 90% of coral reefs in less than 20 years, and nearly all reefs by 2050.

General locations of coral reefs currently in danger

What could or will change this with adjusting trends in the problem areas?

How do we stop coral reefs from disappearing

When around coral reefs -- Don't touch or anchor boats near the reefs - Don't overfish in areas around the reefs During daily life - - Recycle plastics - Utilize cleaner forms of transportation (bikes, carpool, public transit) - Limit the use of chemicals and fertilizers
