What is your recommendation for organizing the social structure in Rome? Explain your reasoning for the social structure you chose for Rome.
Equality
Trade
Trading played an important role in the Roman Civilization's economy. The flow of goods throughout the empire was important not only for the wealth that it brought but also made goods more affordable. Land routes were slow and safer, but did not bring in as much wealth. The sea routes, while the faster and wealthier, had a higher risk of failure because of weather.

Your Task: Once you have collected and given your advice (from the Project Work Day and the Project Due Day) to ancient Rome, now consider how you would share that advice with people to get them to listen.
This is your chance to get really creative in social studies! To share your advice with Rome, you may create a PowerPoint to the Roman Senate, a letter to the leader of Rome, or even an advice column. You may even have something else in mind - just make sure to check in with your teacher about your idea first! For more information check out the Extra Credit Padlet

Social Structure of Egypt
In Egyptian society, religion and the military were the most important focus. The pharaoh would lead both the military battles and conduct religious ceremonies. Priests and nobles would help the pharaoh be successful in both religion and the military.
Government officials and scribes were educated enough to be successful at their jobs, so they held a higher status over the rest of society, who had very little to no education.
Craftsmen, merchants, and farmers had very little rights and influence in their society. They contribute in many ways, but not in government or religion.
Like other societies, the unskilled laborers and slaves had no rights or power in Egypt.
Current Social Stucture of Rome
In Roman society, the patricians were the wealthy Romans, most of them owning land. They had the most power and influence in the government.
The plebians were the farmers and craftsmen. Those plebians who were citizens (men) demanded tribunes, or representatives, in the government, so their voices could be heard.
The enslaved people in Rome had no rights in society. They worked brutal jobs and often were paying off a debt in services.
Caste Sytem of India
India organizes their society in a caste system (a strict social hierarchy that is hereditary). This means based on their family's status in the caste they belong in, dictates the kind of work they did and whom they could marry. The caste system even dictated what people could eat. The caste system was rigid, so people could not move from one caste to another.
- Priests were at the top of the caste system. They helped and managed the religion aspect of India.
- Next, came the warriors and nobles. The warriors protected India, as the nobles helped run the government.
- Freeman and farmers (and traders) were third in importance together, as they held importance in making India successful for food sources and trade items.
- At the bottom are the slaves, laborers, and artisans. The Indian society did not allow them many rights or privileges.
- Non-Aryans made up the lowest class in India, as they would not be considered a part of society, one of them.
Equality in Society
Equality in society means all people would have equal rights in government. Wealth and landownership would not matter.
This would work best in a direct democracy, as all citizens would have a direct say in the government by voting on laws and policies directly.
