Presenter's Notes: Today we will be taking a closer look at the curriculum design process, the theory behind curriculum design, curriculum design models and curriculum design approaches.

Curriculum Design OvervieW

Curriculum design is the process of creating an educational program or plan that outlines what students will learn, how they will learn it, and how their progress will be assessed (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2016). The curriculum design process typically involves several key stages including:

1. Needs assessment 7. Implementation2. Setting learning objectives 8. Review and revision 3. Content selection 4. Sequencing 5. Instructional methods and resources 6. Assessment and evaluation

Presenter's Notes: Let's start with a curriculum design overview and the key stages involved in that process.

Curriculum Design Theory Summary

Curriculum design theory refers to the principles and practices used to develop educational curricula. The theory involves a systematic process of creating learning experiences and content that meet the goals and objectives of education (Yaşar & Aslan, 2021). The goal of curriculum design theory is to create a meaningful and effective learning experience that helps learners achieve their educational goals and prepares then for success in their lives.

Presenter's Notes: It is important to understand curriculum design theory in order for educators to create effective and revelant educational programs that support student learning and success.

Curriculum Design Models

Subject-Centered

Problem-Centered

Learner-Centered

Presenter's Notes: Curriculum design models are frameworks or structures used to guide the process of creating an educational curriculum. These models provide a systematic approach to curriculum development that takes into account various factors such as learning objectives, instructional stategies, assessment techniques, and student needs. Today we will be taking a look at 3 curriculum design models; Subject-Centered, Learner-Centered, and Problem-Centered.

Subject-Centered

Subject-centered approaches focus on the content and structures of the subject matter being taught. This approach is often used in traditional educational settings, such as lectures and textbook-based instruction (Schweitzer, 2019).

Broad-Fields Design

Presenter's Notes: First, let's talk about what is meant by Subject-Centered Designs. and take a look at key points associated with each type of design.within the subject-centered approach

Learner-Centered

Learner-centered approaches, on the other hand, prioritize the needs and interests of the individual learners. This approach emphasizes student engagement, personalized learning, and hands-on activities (Schweitzer, 2019).

Experience-Centered Design

Humanistic Design

Child-Centered Design

Romantic (Radical) Design

Presenter's Notes: Next, let's cover Learner-Centered Designs and key points associated with each type of design. within that approach.

Problem-Centered

Problem-centered approaches center around real-world problems and challenges, and aim to help students develop critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities (Schweitzer, 2019).

Life-Situations Design

Presenter's Notes: This slide hightlights Problem-Centered Designs and the key points associated with each type of design. within this approach.

Curriculum Design Approach Summary

A curriculum approach refers to a structured and systematic approach to designing, implementing, and evaluating an educational curriculum (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2016). It involves a set of principles, processes, and practices that guide the development of educational programs, courses, and instructional materials. There are two ways to look at curriculum approaches; technical/scientific and nontechnical/nonscientific. The first aligns with conventional theories and models of education and follows established structures and methods of teaching. The other emerged from innovative philosophies and political movements and typically questions traditional and formal education practices, while being more adaptable and flexible (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2016).

Presenter's Notes: Having an awareness of design approaches is crucial for enhancing teaching and learning, addressing diverse learner needs, improving assessment and evaluation, fostering an environment of collaboration and professional development, and encouraging educators to keep up with trends and changes. What is a curriculum design approach you ask ?

DESIGN Approach Summaries

Presenter's Notes: The next three slides describe six methods for designing a curriculum. The initial three can be categorized as technical or scientific, while the last two are considered nontechnical and/or scientific. First, let's take a look at the behavioral and managerial approaches.
