Presenting Intensifiers

So/ Such (a/an)

so so... that

such (a/an) such... that

1. SO

e.g. This river is so polluted! I can't believe there are children swimming so happily in these waters!

RULE: SO + ADJECTIVE SO + ADVERB (to make the meaning of the adjective or the adverb stronger)

2. SUCH (A/ AN)

e.g. -It rained with such intensity! -This flood was such a terrible disaster! - It had such an awful impact in our lives!

RULE: SUCH (A/AN)+ NOUN SUCH (A/AN)+ AJECTIVE + NOUN (to intensify nouns or adjectives + nouns )

3. So... that + clause; Such (a(an) ... that + clause

e.g. -This river is so polluted that I can't even see the water! - It rained with such intensity that we now need all the help we can get!

RULE: SO...+ THAT+ CLAUSE SUCH (A/AN)...+ THAT+ CLAUSE (to say what the result of something is)

When we use quantifiers (much, many, little, few) with a noun, we can use so to make it stronger. e.g. There is so much trash on this beach that we won't be able to clean it in one day.

Note:

THAT'S ALL!

That's all!
