DEFINITION

Excretion is the removal of the waste substances of metabolic reactions (the chemical reactions that take place inside cells), toxic materials and substances in excess of requirements.

EXCRETORY PRODUCTS OF MAMMALS

BILE PIGMENTS

UREA

CARBON DIOXIDE

EXCESS WATER AND SALTS/ions

Produced by deamination of excess proteins in the LIVER. Excreted by the KIDNEYS in the urine.

Produced by all cells during respiration, and excreted through the LUNGS.

Produced by the breakdown of heamoglobin in the LIVER. Excreted by the FEACES.

Excreted by the KIDNEYS.

THE HUMAN EXCRETORY SYSTEM

THE KIDNEY

THE NEPHRON

  • Role in the assimilation of amino acids by converting them to proteins.
  • Deamination: the removal of the N-containing part of amino acids to form urea. Urea must be excreted because is toxic in high concentrations.
