Welcome to Science class!
You don't need any materials today.
In the chat box: What are the four spheres of Earth?
You can write a subtitle here
Announcement
Your next science test is on March 6. Check the Padlet for the study guide.
Today we will:
describe how interactions of Earth’s systems result in weather patterns known as monsoons
Earth's Systems Interact
You have learned about the Earth's four systems, or spheres. All four systems interact with each other. Watch the video to learn more about these interactions.
geosphere
biosphere
Earth's Systems Interact
atmosphere
hydrosphere
All four of Earth's systems interact with each other. Describe one way the systems interact.
Monsoons
Have you ever heard of a monsoon? What do you think it might be?
Monsoons
A monsoon is a seasonal weather pattern that involves strong winds that change direction.
The seasonal changes cause the wet and dry seasons in Asia.
Why do Monsoons Happen?
Monsoon Mistake --
Many people think monsoons are heavy rains. Even though there ARE heavy rains involved, monsoons are really a shift in winds that happens when the seasons change.
Monsoons result from the unequal heating of the land and the ocean.
Air always moves from cold areas to warm areas.
Important Fact:
Winter
Air always moves from cold areas to warm areas.
Winter
Summer
The winds blow cool air from the land toward the warm water.
The winds blow cool air from the water toward the warm land.
Summer
Winter
The winds blow cool air from the land toward the warm water.
In the winter, monsoons take dry air out to the sea. It is the dry season.
The winds blow cool air from the water toward the warm land.
In the summer, monsoons bring humid air and large amounts of rain. Plants grow quickly!
Summer
The winds blow cool air from the water toward the warm land.
Winter
The winds blow cool air from the land toward the warm water.
Look at the descriptions above. What three spheres are involved in monsoons?
Go to the Classkick. Use what you learned to draw diagrams of summer and winter monsoons.
Don't forget!
Please: * finish the Classkick * submit your lesson * Have a fabulous Thursday
What is the main difference between summer and winter monsoons?
a. wind speed b. wind temperature c. wind direction
