WOMEN
Marriage18-19th century
unhappy marriages
Socety
Marriage ignored ethics
Pride and Prejudice Lydia runs away with Wickham, causes an incredible scandal. Their marriage fixes everything. Getting married is the most important element of ones life, no matter how undignified the path is
MEN
The only way to be happy in ones's life is to be with the one you love even if the socety wouldn't approve it
MARRIAGE
In Pride and Prejudice, Charlotte and Mr. Collins’ marriage is corrupted
This marriage illustrates a stereotype of unhappy marriage after the Industrial Revolution and it's not based on love or friendship at all, but is more like a business deal in the novel
Mr Collins' propose to Charlotte is unexpected considering that he doesnt't know her at all and this shows how superficial the relationship is but a woman has to think of her financial security first. Marriage is seen as a concept that has only the function of being a “duty” to the society this superficial approach leads to the isolation of woman from man
Jane Austen implies that being mentally compatible is also a key to a happy marriage because helps the individuals to get over their differences and embrace their love for each other, A man can love a woman regardless her wealth or her social rank
MORALITY
Morality central theme of Austen's works
characterized by manners, duty to society and religious seriousness The words "duty" and "manners" are the centre of Jane Austen's ethical vision
Jane Austen
not just etiquette, but also a moral code
Jane Austen believed in a complex moral conscience, that's why she can be considered a "Conservatist christianic moralist" and she feared that economic considerations would overcome moral considerations in human conduct
