Summary: The Giver is a book mainly written from the view point of a boy named Jonas. Jonas is 11 years old and he is living in a futuristic society that has eliminated pain, fear, war, and hatred.
Setting: The setting is in a small community that is isolated and unspecified in the future.
Theme: The most important them of "The Giver" is the significance of memory. An examples of memory from the book "The Giver" is "The worst part of holding the memoriesis not the pain. It's the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared". This can show how important memory is because he is stating that memories need to be shared because holding onto them will only bring pain.
Plot: The plot in "The Giver" was society itself. Jonas lived in a community isolated from most where everyone in the community has assigned roles. There is an annual ceremony of Twelve upcoming, Jonas gets nervous that he will be assigned his life's work.
Symbol: The symbol for The Giver is an apple. The apple represents change. Jonas is tired of everyone in his small community being pretty much the same, so he wants tochange the way people do things in his community.
Characterization: One of Jonas main character trait is being sensitive. "He hunched his hsoulders and tried to make himself smallerin the seat. He wanted to dissapear, to fade away, not to exist". This can show that Jonas is very sensitive because he wanted not to be seen because a few other kids in the book were looking at him and laughing at him.
