Paleogene Period

started 66 million years ago, ended 23 million years ago

Even though this period started off the era we are currently in, (Cenozoic), the world was a very different place. After a mass extinction of dinosaurs, the Earth started to warm, and early mammals started to proliferate. Bony fish and sharks also became more abundant. As forests began to pop up, the continents also continued to drift farther from each other. Unfortunately, this period would end how it started, with a mass extinction. This would lead into the Neogene Period.
