The setting of "The Testing" by Joelle Charbonneau is a dystopian future society that is recovering from a catastrophic event called the Seven Stages War. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where resources are scarce, and different colonies have formed in different regions of the former United States. The main character, Cia Vale, is from the Five Lakes Colony, which is located in what was once the Great Lakes region. The majority of the story takes place in Tosu City, which is the capital city of the United Commonwealth, the government that rules over the colonies. Tosu City is a technologically advanced and highly organized city, but it is also a place where corruption and secrecy abound. Throughout the story, Cia and her fellow competitors travel through different terrains, including a desert, a simulated war game, and a dangerous jungle.
