What is appendicitis?

Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a finger-shaped pouch that projects from the colon on the lower right side of the abdomen.

What or who causes the disease?

  • Hardened stool or growths that may block the opening into the appendix
  • Enlarged tissue in the wall of the appendix, caused by an infection in the digestive tract or elsewhere in the body
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Tumor: When there is a cancerous tumor, the appendix is always obstructed, which must be removed to prevent large-scale infection.
  • Constipation: As stool accumulates, there is an increased risk of the appendix being blocked by stool.

Appendicitis is caused by bacterias (Bacteroides fragilis, Escherichia coli). An incorrect diet can also be a motive, but it’s not very known. Other causes can be:

How is the disease cured or treated?

Doctors usually treat appendicitis by removing the appendix. This surgery is known as an appendectomy. Surgeons perform the operation under general NIH External Link anesthesia in a hospital.

How can it be prevented from spreading or occurring?

Eating a healthy diet, which is to a greater extent rich in fiber, which facilitates the digestive process. The right foods are fruits and vegetables and especially whole grains. It also helps to have a balanced diet, do exercise, take some vitamin supplements and improve body posture. When treatment begins and, especially in the initial phases, it is important to take antibiotics to avoid any complications.

Curiosities

  • Leonid Rogozov is the only person who operated himself for appendicitis

Conclusion

We have to be attentive to the symptoms related to appendicitis because it could perforate and give rise to peritonitis and in the worst case it could lead to death.
