The Hunger Games

characterization

Author: Suzanne Collins

When Katniss volunteered as tribute, she had only done it to protect Prim and her family. Once she saw how the games affected District 12 and the respect they gave her she changed her perspective and changed her motives to fight for District 12 so they could get justice. Katniss was selfless with her act and made an ally named Rue from District 11. For example, "Can you sing? Okay. Deep in the meadow. Under the willows. A bed of grass. A soft green pillow Lay down your head and close your eyes. And when they open, the sun." (Collins 145) Katniss took Rue in as her own and wanted to look after her as she was dying, she was compassionate and even if it slowed Katniss down she wanted to show respect for Rue.

setting

symbol

In the Hunger games The Three Finger Salute is a tradition from Panem in District 12. Its a rarely used gesture to represents giving thank, people sending love, and saying goodbye to someone you love. The three finger salute was first seen at the reaping when the crowd was asked to congradulate Katniss and Peta and solemly and defiently saluted instead. Again it was seen when Katniss honored Rue, another moment of solem defience.

The Hunger Games trilogy takes place in an unspecified future time, in the dystopian, post-apocalyptic nation of Panem, located in North America. The countrey contains one wealthy capital city surrounded by 12 other poor districts.

theme

plot point

The all around theme for "The Hunger Games" is to fight for what you belive in because Katniss and Peeta belive that the capital has too much power and abuses it. So Katniss and Peeta stood up against the captital at the end of the games and they thretend to both die leaving them with no winner then forcing them to allow two winners. The frantic voice of Claudius Templesmith shouts above them. "Stop! Stop! Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to present the victors of the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark! I give you - the tributes of District 12!” (Collins 324) This developed the theme because they knew they would get in trouble but they only cared about helping district 12.

In the rising action, During the District 12 reaping for the 74th Hunger Games, Effie Trinket she chose Primrose Everdeen (Katnis's sister) from the girls' ball. Prim was only 12 years old so katniss volentered as tribute taking Prim's spot. Katniss displayed how selfless she is and how much she truly cares for her family. For example, “I volunteer!” I gasp. “I volunteer as tribute!”” (Collins 22). She is passionate because even though she could die any moment in the games, she only worried about her families saftey.
