Articles: - a /an -The -No article

This is a very deep topic to deal with and you are going to learn a bit more in every level. In B1, you are going to see some basic notions about the use of these articles or no article in English and you will go a bit deeper in your B2 level. Now, let's see each of them individually.

A / An

We use 'a /an' + singular countable nouns

1- When we say what something is or what somebody does. It's a silver magnifying glass / He is a butcher. 2- The first time we mention a thing or a person. I purchased an electric drill for a good friend of mine. 3-In the exclamation with WHAT. What a terrible toothache! 4-In expressions of frequency. I fetch the children twice a week.

The

We use 'the'

1- When we talk about something we've already mentioned. They hired a new employee. The employee was from South Africa. 2- When it is clear what we're refering to. The city hall's worker are on strike. 3-When there is only 'one' of something. The sun rises on the east. 4-With places in a town: cinema, theatre... I am going to the theatre in two week's time. 5-With superlatives. It's the best mortgage I have been able to find.

No article

We don't use an article.

1- When we are speaking in general + plural and uncountable nouns. I love muffins (in general)- ( I love the muffins your mother bakes (in particular those your mather bakes). Love is better than money. 2-With some nouns, eg: home, work, school after the prepositions at/to /from. They ate at home / She came back from school/ They went to work. 3- Before meals, days and months. They are fixing the kitchen cupboard on Friday. 4-Before next, last + day / week. They are getting married next Saturday.
