THE IMPORTANCE OF TREES
AREAS WITH MORE DEFORESTATION
CONSEQUENCES
WHAT IS DEFORESTATION?
Deforestation is the purposeful clearing of forested land. Throughout history and into modern times, forests have been razed to make space for agriculture and animal grazing, and to obtain wood for fuel, manufacturing, and construction.
Causes
- Wood extraction;
- Infrastructure expansion, such as road building and urbanization;
- Climate Change;
- Paper;
- Livestock Ranching;
Consequences
The loss of trees and other vegetation can cause:
- climate change,
- desertification,
- soil erosion,
- fewer crops,
- flooding,
- increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere,
- Problems for Indigenous people.
Prevention
- Use less paper.
- Plant trees
- Recycle paper and cardboard.
- Use recycled products.
- Buy only sustainable wood products.
- Don't buy products containing palm oil.
- Reduce meat consumption.
- Do not burn firewood excessively.
Why are trees so important?
Trees are vital. As the biggest plants on the planet, they give us oxygen, store carbon, stabilise the soil and give life to the world's wildlife. They also provide us with the materials for tools and shelter.
WHERE THERE IS MORE DEFORESTATION?
Five countries concentrate more than half (54%) of the global forest: Russia (20%), Brazil (12%), Canada (9%), United States of America (8%) and China (5%).
