Informatics system to improve patient outcomes

Abigail JonesWest Coast UniversityNurs 590A:Informatics System to Improve Patient Outcomes Presentation Dr. Farrell, T. 03/05/2023

Abstract

This presentation discusses the benefits of EPIC EHR implementation and its positive effects on patient outcomes and nursing processes. It provides data on the improvement in efficiency, performance, patient perceptions on quality of care, and clinical care performance. A breakdown of the cost of implementing EPIC EHR system is discussed as well as the great features that help improve patient outcomes.

Epic EHR Software

  • Founded in 1979
  • In use across a broad range of practices, from community hospitals and independent practices to multi-specialty hospital groups and hospice care providers.
  • More than 280 million patients have a current electronic record in Epic
(Who We Are, n.d.)

Sharing Features

The Epic Community is a Sharing Community

Foundation System

Clinical &Financial Programs

Community Library

Other Organizations who use Epic share their successes. Their best tools and practices go into Epic's Foundation System.

Organizations share note templates, order sets, and other clinical and operational content for you to learn and build from

Replicate the successes of other health systems with Clinical and Financial Programs.

Success at Seven

Benchmarking

App Market

Epic's HIMSS Stage 7 community members are doing with inteoperability, patient engagement, population health, telehealth and financial health.

Epic App Market provides a platform for health systems to share or sell thier software.

Measure yourself against your peers with built-in performance benchmarking.

Environmental SercvicesMake staff aware of required cleaning protocols automatically based on isolation information

a thoughtful approach to clinical decision support

Clinical Decision Support (CDS) built into the EHR improves patient safety:

  • helping users avoid errors
  • increase adherence to clinical guidelines
  • helping clinicials identify and intervene sooner with patients who are at high risk for negative outcomes (Rebhorn, 2023).

Retrospective Data analysis

  • Associated with 1.6% higher performance score compared with hospitals that use other EHR systems
  • Approximately 4.7% positively associated with improved efficiency quality scores
  • 2.9% positively associated with higher patient perceptions of quality scores
  • 3.8% positively associated higher clinical care performance scores
(Beauvais, B., et al., 2021).

Nurses lead the way to patient safety

  • Rochester, New York hospital found they had 68% fewer central line infections, 20% fewer falls, and improved safety for blood transfusions with the use of EPIC
  • Their nursing leadership and staff led the safety improvements, identifying safety measures in epic, training colleagues, and advocating for new workflows.
  • Their nurse led project teams and CNO council used analytics in EPIC each week to review workflows and policies and make adjustments as needed.
(Nurses Lead, 2021).

Enhances Nursing Clinical Documentation Workflows

  • 25-50% of rows nurses did not use on their flowsheets were removed, including rows that were irrelevant to the patient.
  • Helped reduce 18 minutes per 12 hour shift from documentation time.
  • Corresponds to 64,800 hours saved annually
(Nelson, 2022)

A Comprehensive Review of EPIC

Epic excells when it comes to drawing out the vast warehouse of data it stores and generating reasonably accurate outcome measures

(Johnson, R., 2021)

Cost of Implementation

  • Epic is not transparent with pricing
  • One source states it can cost approximately between $1200-$500,000
  • Pricing depends on organization type and amount of potential users of the system.
  • A CLABSI can cost up to $48,000 or more per person

(How Much Does Epic Cost, n.d.), (Chopra, V., n.d.)

Can be personalized and is user friendly
