Theme/setting

  • Unwind, Written by Neal Shusterman, is a dystopian/futuristic version of the United States. And takes place after the second civil war, where the main conflict was reproductive rights. The government passed the "Bill of life" where a parent cannot terminate their baby, but they can unwind their child once they reach 13. Unwinding is the process by which the government harvests organs from teenagers and justifies it by saying that their organs are still going to live on in other people's bodies. However, this law only benefits wealthy people who have the money to buy the best body parts and organs that they can, while the poor cannot and are more vulnerable because of these laws.
  • Striking and The inequality of the Law.

Characterization

Connor is a very Proteccting, impusive, and passionate person. Connor first started out as a troubled teen and prone to acting out, which is why his parents unwound him. However while running away with Lev and Risa he gains a new perspective and learns from them. He learns how to control his anger and deals with the traums he had.

"Connor might be a lot of things, but he is no killer so he hold his tenper in."

Symbol

They went on a rampage to find all the people who received Humphrey’s parts, kill them, and put their son together again.

The urban legend of Humphrey Dunfeewas a symbol of the effects of unwinding and the consequences of unwinding teens. The parents unwinded their child, Humphrey Dumphrey, and realized their mistake was irreversable. Some say that the parents went on a killing spree to get back the organs and put Humphrey back together, however we learn at the end of the story that the father on Humphrey was the general of the refugee camp and refuses organ doners because of the trauma from unwinding, shows how trauma can be a powerful motivator for someone to begin to challenge the status quo and change the world for the better.

Connor reasons that they could’ve ended up like Humphrey Dunfee. Lev is surprised that Connor knows the story, but Risa insists it’s made up.
