Summary

The Giver is about a boy, named Jonas, who lives in a society free from emotion and pain. The Community, where Jonas lives, sets up every citizen's lives from the moment they are born. In The Community, they like to be bland towards the citizens when it comes to important matters like death. The main climax in the story is when Jonas finds out his job is The Reciever, an important, honored, and rare job title. He gets trained by an old man, the towns past receiver, now called the Giver. The Giver transmits past memories of a world without restriction to Jonas. The Giver and Jonas create a plan to escape The Community and expose The Community. Jonas escapes The Community and finds a world of color and kindness, but also hunger and violence. The story ends with Jonas feeling his first thoughts of moral resentment, denouncing his father and the community as murderers.

Theme

The main theme in "The Giver" by Lois Lowry is that sometimes, conforming to society can be more dangerous than individuality. "The worst part of holding memories is not the pain. It's the lonliness of it. Memories need to be shared." - The Giver

"You have the colors' The Giver told him. 'And you have the courage. Let me give you the strength." - The Giver

Plot

In my opinion, the most important plot point in The Giver is the exposition because of the amount of background info and setting it provides.

Symbol

This symbol is a color wheel and represents how important color was in the book as color was one of the major points of emotion missing from The Community.
