I beleive that the theme in Proxy is that some debts can never be repaid. It come up a lot in the book and it's even on the front cover of the book.

I think that a character triat of Syd is sceptical. He never knows who to trust and when. It's how he was raised.

The general setting takes place in The Upper City, a place for people who are rich, and also in The Valve, a place for people are really poor.

A symbol could be the words Yovel behnd Syd's ear which was created by the virus. Yovel means jubilee which represents the saving of debts.
