Winston's most defining characteristic is his propensity to be a rebellion. He despises the Party and is always questioning its power. We know this because Winston writes things such as "DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER" as well as to engaging in an illicit relationship with Julia, to covertly ingratiating himself with the anti-Party Brothers.
The novel 1984 takes place in Oceania. After reading the book you know that the characters experience political repression of free expression, government monitoring, and conflicts.
