Timeline
Originally from Liverpool, the ConnexOne brothers moved to Chester growing up. Their father, Shaun Mealey, came from a working class area of Liverpool where he set up his own construction company to support his 5 children.
Nick and Richard faced a lot of pressure from their family to study Economics and pursue a career in the financial services industry. As a result, Nick enrolled in University for Economics.
Nick shared his vision with Richard, who was 17. Richard, at the time, was fascinated with coding and taught himself how to code and build apps. Before his GCSE's, Richard dropped out and became a 17 year old CTO.
Their mother was severely disappointed at the two’s dropout, thinking that Nick had corrupted his younger brother. But both brothers had no such concerns at the time, never looking back at their decision since.
By 2017, they exited their seed investors and sought after those who could mentor them. Brian Kennedy (Latium Tech), Sir Terry Leahy (CEO, Tesco) and The William Currie Group saw their potential and became trusted investors and advisors to Connex One
Brian Kennedy introduced the Mealey brothers to Hugh Campbell, GP Bullhound's Co-founder. Hugh Campbell was very well connected in Manchester and invited them to the annual Northern Tech Awards, where Nick received the 'Young Entrepreneur Award'
In 2019, GP Bullhound was appointed as Connex One's Corporate Finance Advisor. The founders grew very close to the GP Bullhound' team in Manchester.
In 2020, GP Bullhound ranks Connex One as #59 in the Top 100 Fastest Growing Tech Companies Outside of London, during the annual Northern Tech Awards 2020
GP Bullhound's Fund V invested in Connex One as a testament to our belief in the founders and the company. GP Bullhound also featured the brothers in the annual Titans of Tech Report.
By the end of 2022, the brothers had expanded into 9 countries and had a global workforce of over 1,000 employees. Connex One clinched the 'Cloud Technology Provider of the Year' at the Prolific North Tech Awards 2022 and Nick was awarded 'Entrepreneur of the Year'
By April 2021, they had over 70 developers and 200 employees under them (including their mother, who they "have a laugh with" once in a while about the journey
In 2014, Connex One hit a turnover of £1M and began expanding
In Nick's second year at University, he grew more and more interested in Big Data and Software. Eventually, he told his parents that he was dropping out and starting his own business. They were furious.
