Weather Station at School
start
At present we are going through constant changes in the climate and in several of its main variables, such as; temperature and humidity. There are very few professional meteorologists and that is why it is important that if they are interested they can study this career.
We share some videos to continue reflecting and learning:
We share some videos to continue reflecting and learning:
In this sense, we want you to participate in a contest to design proposals to build a weather station. Would you be interested in participating?
What is it about?
This activity will allow them to become aware of the most important changes and the most frequent weather conditions. The collection and recording of the data can be done, either in the simple appreciation of the phenomena, or in the correct use of the specific measurement instruments. A weather station is an installation in which, through different instruments, devices and devices, data from the atmosphere is continuously recorded in a certain specific environment.
With the data obtained, specialized scientists can make statistical tables and graphs, which allow weather forecasts and study the climate of a particular place, since we constantly receive stimuli and signals from the world.
So we propose that they build the prototype of a weather station that allows them to explore and test the temperature, humidity and other climatic topics of a city or a town. Do you want to become a meteorologist for a day?
Go ahead, we need more meteorologists in our society!
Goals:
- Get students to approach issues related to science and meteorology.
- Promote observation and exploration of the environment.
- That students can know and explore the use of humidity and temperature sensors, and how to measure them.
- Formulate different concrete solutions to a problematic situation using robotic devices, identifying the dimensions of design, construction, operation and use.
- Work collectively and collaboratively to solve problems, favoring the exchange of ideas, and clearly and sequenced communication of solution strategies before the problems raised.
way of working
- The students will work and investigate previously with their teacher on the subject matter.
- Later they will be organized into work teams and will begin to solve the challenge posed, developing all the assembly and programming of the same.
- They will carry out the corresponding tests and tests and will solve collectively the problems that arise..
Resources needed for the activity
- Kit 503 Agro of Probots.
- Computers or notebooks.
Part One: Assembling the Robot
Second part: Programming the robot
- How to program
- Validation of the program
- Robot assembly
- Step by step
- Functional validation
Activity evaluation
Verification and testing in response to the objectives of the activity
We propose that based on some premises to consider, stop thinking about correct and incorrect, start thinking about solving problem situations and transform the error into a reviewer of ideas and not into an object of frustration.
For this, we share a rubric so that collectively and with the help of the teachers they can mark the items and options that they consider and correspond:
During the project, a processual, continuous and formative evaluation will be carried out. To evaluate the completion of the project, the following were taken into account: responsibility, commitment to group work, participation, presentation of models, brochures, dissemination sheets of what was worked on in class and in the classroom, etc.
What did they learn and how did they do it?
In this activity, students have approached issues related to science and meteorology, promoting the observation and exploration of the environment. They have recognized various sensors and their possible uses. Faced with the shared problem, they have proposed and designed some solution pre-designs, which they have tested with their colleagues, modified, etc. They have always worked collectively and collaboratively to solve problems, favoring the exchange of ideas.
extra challenge
It is suggested as an extra activity that students assume the role of "meteorologists for a day", and that they can take a systematic record of the states of the weather, being able in the future, from the series of data obtained, be used in comparisons and in obtaining annual averages, to use predictions in the future, etc.
Other possible activities that we recommend you do are:
• The measurements of the variables could be recorded day by day, putting together data tables in spreadsheets (Ms-Excel or Calc). • Then the tables could be analyzed at each change of season to draw conclusions from colder, warmer months , more humid, etc.
In relation to programming, the following specific challenges are suggested:
Corresponding to the humidity indicators, we propose the following challenges: Using the humidity sensor, we must program the display so that it is displayed when the humidity is greater than 80%, that the legend is displayed on the display: "High humidity in the environment” A buzzer could also be incorporated and it sounds when the humidity is greater than 70%. A very interesting recommendation is that you can make different measurements in different parts of the school to identify which are the most humid places.
