Branches of the Government

The Canadian Government is separated into three branches to maintain a balance of power through a system of checks and balances.

The Judicial

The Executive

The Legislative

The Executive Branch

- This is the branch of government that creates and passes laws. - The executive branch includes the Monarch (represented by the Governor General), the Prime Minister and the Cabinet.

The Legislative Branch

- This branch of the Government enforces all the laws. - It is comprised of the Monarch, Senate and the House of Commons. - Senate and House of Commons members propose, review and pass bills, which then become laws.

The Judicial Branch

- This is the branch of the government that makes decisions for Canada. - The judicial branch is made up of a system of courts. The supreme court of Canada can be divided into the Federal Court and Provincial Courts. - It is independent from the Executive and Legislative branches.
