Peregrine falcon

The peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) is a cosmopolitan bird of prey in the family Falconidae. A large, crow-sized falcon, it has a blue-grey back, barred white underparts, and a black head. As in other birds of prey, the female is larger than the male.

It feeds on a wide variety of birds. Pigeons are generally the preferred prey in cities and often take ducks and shorebirds along the coast. Although its diet consists almost exclusively of medium-sized birds, the peregrine will sometimes hunt small mammals, small reptiles, or even insects.

The peregrine is renowned for its speed, It does not normally fly at speeds greater than 100 km/h but reaching over 320 km/h during its characteristic hunting stoop, making it the fastest bird in the world, as well as the fastest member of the animal kingdom.

The peregrine's breeding range includes land regions from the Arctic tundra to the tropics. It can be found nearly everywhere on Earth, except extreme polar regions, very high mountains, and most tropical rainforests. This makes it the world's most widespread raptor, and one of the most widely found bird species.
