What are listening styles?

Our unconscious approach to attending to a persons message

the way we listen depends on three things our personal listening style, our level of listening apprehension, and adopting listening style in a specific situation

Types of listening styles

Relational

Transactional

Critical

Analytical

Relational listening

• focusing on what the message tells us about our conversational partners and their feelings, connecting emotionally

• Advantages: being good at empathy, comfort, and support
• Disadvantages: information can be interpreted inaccurately

Transactional Listening

• wanting speakers to stay on topic ,"get to the point"

• Advantages: Gets things accomplished
• Disadvantages: Fully listening can be an issue and can cause listener to be offended, rushing, and ignoring feelings

Critical Listening

evaluating closely on speakers accuracy and consistency in messages

• Advantages: easy evaluation of speaker messages
• Disadvantages: paying too close attention to errors can affect the quality of the conversation

Analytical Listening

Gathering information to understand speakers conveyed message to form a more logical response

• Advantages: understanding the information being said to you
• Disadvantages: focusing too much on understanding others and doesn't tend to how the person would feel
