Trying to manage a GCSE speaking exam is a bit like trying to fight ten experienced Kung Fu masters at the same time because there are so many things to think about at once. But don't worry, I'm going to show you some tricks to get you going in no time...

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO COVER?

Our steps

My notes

General information

You need to ask the examiner at least once question (they can prompt you if you forget)

The sequence chart then determines which other theme to discuss (this will be a different one to the one on your picture card)

You will first discuss your chosen theme for 2.5- 3.5 minutes (when you have chosen the higher tier)

So, what does it look like?

My notes

The general conversation will start with a discussion of your chosen theme. This is where you can really show off your skills. Try to use a variety of tenses and complex sentence strcutures but be careful to get the verb endings right.

General conversation

You will then have to discuss one more theme. This is a little more difficult as you won't know beforehand which theme this might be, so most students tend to struggle with this as it is less familiar. However, you can use your preparation time to work out what the other theme will be and to jot down some helpful ideas. It will be different to your chosen theme and to the picture card so that eventually all 3 themes are covered in some way.

  • Carefully choose your preferred theme
  • before the exam, prepare which question(s) to ask the examiner
  • show off your skills: use a variety of tenses and complex structures
My notes

What do examiners look for?

Focus on developing your answers

  • giving and explaining opinions
  • adding specific details
  • using complex sentence structures
  • using a variety of subordinating conjunctions (weil, da, obwohl, ...)

Use a range of different tenses (try to use at least three or four different tenses. The examiners especially seem to like the conditional)

Be proactive and ask questions or add spontaneous exclamations

MORE TIPS AND TRICKS

My notes

If you don’t understand a question and want it repeated, you can use one of these German phrases

  • Wie bitte?
  • Können Sie das wiederholen?
  • Kann ich das nochmal hören?

Create flashcards and test yourself frequently, ideally using a spaced repetition format

If you use a speaking booklet or anything similar, try common techniques used by actors to memorise their lines quickly

AMAZING WORK!
