SUMMARY
"The City of Ember" by Jeanne DuPrau is a dystopian story about an underground city built by builders where it is almost impossible to escape. The underground city is slowly dying becuase of the shortage of food and supplies. The main characters Lina and Doon soon discover a black box that has a map on how to escape their underground city, but the only problem is there is no light in the escape route.
THEME
The theme of the book "The City of Ember" is the fear of the unknown. The characters Lina and Doon are trying to escape their city but can't because there's no light. This piece of text evidence indicates there fear of the unknown regions. "Nothing! Nothing! There is nothing out there!’ His voice became a shout and his eyes looked wild again. ‘Or if there is we can never get to it. Not without a light." (DuPrau 7).
CHARACTERIZATION
The main character Lina Mayfleet shows the characteristic of curiosity. Throughout the story Lina is always trying to find ways to escape the underground city. This piece of evidence illustrates the mayor saying that being curious is a poor quality to have ″‘Curiosity,‘said the mayor. ‘A dangerous quality. Unhealthy. Especially regrettable in one so young.‘” The mayor explains to Lina.
PLOT
A plot point in this book is Lina and Doon looking for clues to escape the city. Since their city is falling apart due to the shortage of food and supplies they are trying to find ways to escape. Eventually they find a map of the city that helps them escape so they can survive and get to safety.
SYMBOL
The symbol in this book is a light bulb. The light bulb represents how they have no light in their city and how that source of there light is there only light and only way to escape the city.
