SETTING: Island off the coast of Maine - explained more in detail in the audio.
The one significant plot point is when Byatt goes missing, that is when we get a more in-depth review of the character's relationships and backstories. We learn more about what really goes around the boarding school. We also learn about what happens to the ones that are missing. All the missing pieces come together. When Byatt goes missing, we are introduced to a dual perspective so not only are we aware of what is going on in the school but what is going on outside, and what government officials are doing , ,researching and experimenting. Before Byatt goes missing the entire book is a mystery, the reader not the characters know what is going on outside of what they are told. After Byatt disappears, Hetty's character changes and because of this change we learn more. Byatt changes the course of the characters and the course of the book.
PLOT
The Birch Tree is the biggest symbol in the book. The Birch tree is next to the Harker House which represents Reese's childhood. The birch tree symbolizes rebirth, new beginnings, and growth. A birch tree represents the life outside of the fence around the school. It is a reminder that the characters are still fighting for something. At the end of the book the characters find out the truth and escape the school. They actually pass the birch tree, this important because it is symbolizing the new beginning that the characters want and deserve. The birch tree also plays a huge role in the plot, for example, when Hetty and Reese went after Byatt, Byatt craved BW on the tree. This is how Hetty knew Byatt was alive.
SYMBOL
I believe the theme is about our abilities to adapt to a world that is changing around us. In the book it states, "It still happens like that. Only difference is now we've learned that all we can do it look after our own."(Power 10). The qoute symbolizes how it took them a while to get used to the disease and the affects that is had on the their bodies, but whenever they adapted they worked better together and helped each out. This also applies to our world. The book is telling us to work together to help us adapt to our everchanging world.
When an isolated all- girls boarding school gets infected by a disease called the Tox, a disease that mutates your body, they are cut out from the rest of the world. The girls and staff are left to fend for themselves, getting occasional support from the Navy, the entire school goes on strict lockdown. However when Hetty's best friend Byatt gooes missing, Hetty will break all laws to find her. In doing so Hetty and Reese find out secrets and hidden truths, which could ultimately make thier entire life a lie. The girls must find a way to cure themselves whie escaping the island.

REVIEW
There are 3 main protengists in the book, and in some way they all compliment each other. Focusing on Hetty, she is swift and smart. Hetty can think on her feet and can get out of sticky situations which is needed many times throughout the book. Focusing on this ability, she does what is needed no matter how big the consequence appears to be. This is shown whenever, Reese and Hetty are at the Harker House and they see Mr.Harker affected by Tox. Mr. Harker is not himself and tries to attack them, Hetty defends both of them and injures Mr. Harker ultimately leading to his death. Even though it cost her Reese's friendship, she did what was needed to protect both of them.
