Synopsis

The setting of Steelheart is Newcago which is the old Chicago that was turned to metal during Calamity. Newcago is also filled with tunnels because the epic "Steelheart" ordered people to dig tunnels in the city.

After Calamity, where the world is half destroyed and the world ends in turmoil, Epics, people with incredible powers take over the world. The protanganist, David, is an 18 year old whose parents were killed by the Epic Steelheart. Steelheart rules the city of Newcago where David lives. David spends his time collecting weapons and observing the Epics to find their weakness, the only way they can die. While scouting an epic, the Reckoners, a group of men and women who kill epics, attack and kill an epic in front of David. David attempts to help them. The Reckoners take David in and he becomes a member of their order. After killing a few minor epics, David manages to convince their leader, Prof, to attempt to kill Steelheart. After significant preparation, they meet Steeheart at Soldier Field. They desperatly fight and the Reckoners attempt to retreat, but David stays. He realizes that Steelheart could only be killed by somone who doesn't fear him. David rigs his handgun to explode when shot . Steelheart takes the handgun and attempts to shoot it, not realizing it was rigged and is killed in the explotion. The Reckoners then take control of Newcago.

Theme:

Passion is the driving force behind overcoming a challenge. “I've seen Steelheart bleed. And I will see him bleed again.”(Sanderson 16) You have to have passion to be able to persevere through the hardships that come in reaching your goals and overcoming the challenges life presents.

Characterization:

David exhibits the character trait intellegence because he spends his time researching and watching epics, waiting for the perfect time to avenge his fathers death.

This is a symbol of people who are part of the "Faithful". A group of people who believe that the epics have come to save to world from calamity. Abraham is part of the faithful and gives David his necklace with this symbol

Plot Point

The story Steelheart reaches it's climax when David convinces Prof to attempt to attack the epic Steelheart.
