HELIX

POPULATION GENOMICS

OBJECTIVES

Determine the origin of Helix.

Identify the advange and disadvantage of helix digital app.

Understand the importance of the invention of helix.

WHAT IS HELIX?

Helix is a digital app store designed to read genomes. It is the leading population operating at the intersection of clinical care, research, and data analytics. Helix enables health systems, life sciences, and government partners to accelerate the integration of genomic data into patient care and public health decision making. Through its viral genomic programs, helix supports the theraputic development healthcare by accelerating clinical trials and by providing real-world data and evidences that generate high value insights related to heriditary and infectious disease therapies. In this lesson we will learn more about Helix, its origin, application, as well as its advantage and disadvantage.

BIRTH OF HELIX

Helix was created in August 2015 by co-founders James Lu, Justin Kao, Scott Burke (Ramsey, 2016). Only the United States are currently served by Helix, though some of the apps they are partnered with operate internationally independent of Helix. Robin Thurston, who created MapMyFitness and acted as CEO until the service was acquired by Under Armour, was brought in as CEO of Helix in 2016. Thurston joined the team because he was interested in going back to a startup after years at an established company. He wanted to make genomic data both fun and accessible to the average consumer (Ramsey, 2016). Helix’s leadership was confident that Thurston can help Helix advance as DTC genetic testing enters the mainstream.

WHY WAS IT MADE?

While the latter DNA test for ancestry and health information, Helix wanted to provide more to people interested in obtaining more genetic information. DNA testing sites like ancestry.com, 23andMe, MyHeritage, etc. provide genotype testing. Helix provides DNA sequencing.
