What are Adult Learning Theories?

The concept of adult learning theories are rooted in Malcolm Knowles research (Fairbanks, 2021). It stated that learning as an adult involves a concept called andragogy or the "science of teaching adults." In conjunciton, pedagogy is the practice of teaching children using learning theories and strategies. Learning as an adult versus a child is quite different and unique as their retention of information varies as a part of their brain development over time. Five Pillars of andragogy: 1. A preference for self-directed learning. 2. An ability to draw on life expereinces to assist in learning. 3. A willingness to learn when transitioning into new roles. 4. A focus on applying new knowledge to real life situations and problems immediately. 5. A tendacy to be internally motivated vs externally.

How do these prinicples apply to instuctional coaching?

Point 1

Point 3

Point 2

Best coaching practices encourage collaborative and reflective teaching.

Coaches offer guidance and resources for their teachers and have them apply to their classrooms immediately.

Teachers apply these ideas of andragogy as self-directed and motivated learners in real life situations.

Strategies for Coaching Adults

Keep Things Relevant:- Adults are more interested and engaged when learning can be applied to current real life applications.Integrate Their Experience:- Integrating what they already know will create opportunities for new information and connections between what they know and what they will know.Keep Them Involved:- Adults prefer to be active and engaged so it's important to find multiple points in coaching to bring them into conversations and situations where they can implement what they've recently learned/discussed.

Andragogy vs. Pedagogy

The main difference between andragogy and pedagogy is the target audience. Andragogy is the institution of learning theories targeted at adults while pedagogy is teaching children. Students are learning to advance from one grade to the next and achieving learning objectives through teacher instruction as opposed to andragogy, whereas adults advance and learn through self-motivation and in collaboration with an instructional coach. When coaching an adult, it's very important to make the material and information pertainable to the adults to stimulate participation and motivation. In pedagogy, teachers are responsible for designing the curriculum and shaping the learning process as compared to andragogy where teachers are responsible for facilitating their own learning in collaboration with a coach.

Andragogical Strategies

Involve learning through experiential learning: - Allow adults to learn through experience and promote active participation. Give multiple means of learning: - Like our students, everyone learns differentially and with andragogy coaches need to offer multiple avenues for accessing information and learning through participation.
