The European Union

What is ?

A supranational political and economic union. Equipped with its own legal system e regulations governing and protecting : competition, trade, transport, energy, agriculture, fisheries, environment, consumer protection, employment and social affairs, justice and fundamental rights, migration and home affairs

Foundation

  • Treaty of Rome of 25 March 1957.Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany joened for CEE
  • Euratom
  • Treaty of Maastricht of 1 November 1993 ,The European Union was formally established
  • Treaty of Lisbon, entered into force on 1 December 2009, unification of the European Community, Judicial Cooperation, and PESC

Court of justice

Is the judicial branch of the European Union — consisting of two courts: the Court of Justice and the General Court.

-The Court of Justice mainly deals with cases raised by the courts of the Member States and the institutions.

-The General Court mainly deals with cases brought by individuals and companies directly before the EU courts, and the European Union Civil Service Tribunal adjudicates disputes between the European Union and its civil service.

The European Parliament is one of the EU's legislative institutions which is responsible for amending and approving Commission proposals.

705 members who are elected directly by EU citizens every five years on the basis of proportional representation.

The current President of the European Parliament is Roberta Metsola, elected on 18 January 2022.
