THANKSGIVING DAY
The USA was inhabited by native American tribes for many centuries. From the 16th century onwards many Europeans settled there and took the land from the natives for themselves.
In 1620 a hundred people, known as the Pilgrim Fathers, arrived from England. Many of them died during their first winter because they didn't have enough food.
The following year, thanks to the native Americans, they had a good crop of food to eat during the coming winter. They thanked God and celebrated their first Thanksgiving Day.
The United States celebrates Thanksgiving on every 4th Thursday in November. In Canada, it’s always celebrated on the 2nd Monday in October. It’s a time to be thankful for all that people have.
Thanksgiving traditions vary depending on the region, but playing backyard football on Turkey Day with family and friends has been a tradition across the country since the 19th century.
In modern times, ’Turkey Day’ (a name for Thanksgiving), is a special holiday for both Americans and Canadians. Although there are slight differences, the two countries agree that roast turkey is the symbol of this holiday dinner. For Americans, no Thanksgiving meal would be complete without corn on the cob, stuffing, mashed potatoes ecc.
THE WAR OF INDIPENDENCE
In 1764 England imposed special taxes on colonists who did not want to be ruled by Britain anymore. In 1775 the American War of Independence began. After many battle the English were defeated and in 1787 the Constitution was written and adopted by all 13 states. Its basic principle was that "all men are created equal". In 1789 George Washinton was elected the first President of the USA.
THE CIVIL WAR
From 1861 until 1865 there was a terrible Civil War between Southern states and northen states. The southern states didn't agree on the laws about abolishing slavery becauseblack slaves were an essential part of their economy: they came from Africa and were forced to work a lot of hours a day. Womens and kids worked i their master's house.
After many bloody battles th enorrthen states won the war and as a result slavery ended in the USA. By the end of the 19th century the USA had acquired most of his territory and had become the country that we know today, the mos powerful country in the world.
